You can avoid holding stock, but that doesn’t make the whole sale free. The supplier still expects payment before the marketplace releases your payout, and somebody has to handle product research, listings, and promotion. AI can take some of that early work off your plate while you test whether the idea gets any sales. You can read about how to start AI dropshipping with zero money here: https://easync.io/articles/how-to-start-ai-dropshipping/ . Treat the free stage as a trial run with a few products, not a promise that the business will never cost anything. Keep a card or small cash reserve ready for supplier charges while the first payouts clear.

A garage full of boxes is a rough way to find out that nobody wants the product. A lot of beginners buy too much too early and then spend months trying to get their cash back. Print-on-demand is one route that doesn’t require buying a batch upfront. You upload your designs to products such as shirts or mugs, and the printing company makes and ships each item after it sells. Check the fees and production cost before setting the price because the margin can get thin quickly.

I’ve been thinking about trying eBay or another marketplace as a side thing after work. The problem is that I don’t have a few thousand dollars to fill a garage with products, and borrowing money for something I haven’t tested sounds like a bad idea. I keep seeing sellers list items they never store themselves, then have another company ship the order. Can you really sell someone else’s products without buying the inventory first, or is there always some upfront cost hiding somewhere?
