Thanks for the in-depth reply Jamie, but sprawling out into other programs which need other programs... that way madness lies, and Muvizu should be easy to use, so...

Unwilling to accept that I needed to learn Maya just to do this I checked around, and the ASE exporter we use for Sketchup says it supports UV and texture exports - but it only seems to work for UT3 itself, not Muvizu natively (incidentally there's a new version of HSKP2UNR - v1.02 beta). The new version doesn't change anything relevant, but while I was messing around I discovered a (pretty ugly) fix.

- Created a box in Sketchup, used the Materials window to paint some surfaces (doesn't actually matter which material you use, it just marks that face as textured). Exported it as an ASE as per usual.

- Copied the texture I wanted to the c:\UT3 folder as a BMP file (let's say wallpaper.bmp)

- Edited the ASE file for the box, and replaced the name of the texture from Sketchup to the name of the texture I copied to the c:\UT3 folder

*SUBMATERIAL 1 {
*MATERIAL_NAME ""
   *MATERIAL_CLASS "Standard"
*MAP_DIFFUSE {
*MAP_CLASS "Bitmap"
   *BITMAP "C:\ut3\wallpaper.bmp"

- As you can see, the name of the material is Brick Basket Two, but the bitmap can be renamed something different.

- Loaded up the object as per usual in Muvizu, and lo and behold, one (wallpaper) textured box.

You could probably tweak the UV scaling options to get a better fit for your model, but I'm happy to just have some way of achieving something in the same ballpark as JonBez's excellent rocks. See what you've started JB?

The tutorial is good also, but I don't have access to Maya either.

Ziggy, from my experience Sketch Up is weird. What John was doing was a UV map (i think) which isn't naively supported in Sketch Up. Basically you have to apply all textures per face and align them manually, which sucks and if your not careful you've import a model with a 10" by 10" repeat or something horrible like that. Trying to sort every face manually is a nightmare, so normally I just use basic colours to texture my objects once they are in Muvizu. There are a few plugins for UV mapping in Sketch Up but i've not tried them yet, check them out anyway and perhaps John will give us all some more tips

Sketchup UV mapping plugins -

UV Tools
http://news.sketchucation.com/uv-tools-0-2-pro-beta-released/
- forum topics:
http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=18992

UV Toolkit
http://news.sketchucation.com/uv-toolkit-011b/
- forum topics:
http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=23725&start=0

Both appear to be free, from an initial check, however the require additional software such as blender (referencing blender as its free also). You do, however, need to register with http://www.sketchucation.com forums in order to download.
I'll try to look into these soon.
edited by Jamie on 10/04/2011

Thanks Jon,

I just spent the better part of an hour cursing at my screen until finally I found the UV mapping in Carrara... and it worked! All this just to import a beer can, haha.

I checked out the many tutorials on here for collision and never got them to work. I'll try your sugestion of actually naming the object in the program, that may well do the trick. Thanks so much!

It wasn't really a tutorial More of a quick demonstration because I felt showing visually would be more helpful than me trying to explaining in txt. If I get time next week I'll do a detailed tut with a voice over.

UVs just lets you plan how the texture sits on the model. I'm sure there is some in depth tutorials on youtube for what ever program you use.

To make a collision work you need to tag its name using UCX_

example: UCX_mycollision

Then select your object and collision and export selected objects as ASE format.

In case you haven't seen it yet. Muvizu has a tutorial that explains about adding collisions
http://www.muvizu.com/Video/12421/Tutorial-07-Importing-3D-models

Jon, I can assure you I didn't add UVs when I modelled because I have no idea what that means. I saw when you did it in the video, still don't know what it is. Or, for that matter, how you so easily added a collision box because even following the tutorial here step by step I could never get the collision to work using even a basic shape like a cube.

I use Carrara and Google Sketchup for the simpler stuff and have had nothing but problems. Perhaps it's a sign to stop trying to model my own stuff...

Thanks for the video though, it was way cool!
edited by Danimal on 09/04/2011

I made a quick video for you dreeko showing the process from start to finish. Its not a tutorial explaining how to, its more just to show u visually rather than trying to explain the process in writing. The rock that I made in this video didn't have any real thought put into it or time spent in perfecting the UVWs but it does outline the steps I use.

Hope this is of some use to you m8

I put it in fast forward so not to bore the **** out of you

It can be slowed down in VLC player with the + and - keys if needed.

@Danimal Sounds like you didn't add UVs on your model. I show that process at super humsan speed in this video

I've found that when you import ASE objects, if you select "Don't use ID Textures" you can use image maps. What I don't understand is how you got the scale on them. When I do it, the image tiles a BILLION times no matter what the size of the original image is, so it ends up looking like tiny dots.

Any insight on how to get the images to wrap properly would definitely be appreciated.
