Posts: 123 		For quite a few years I've been a big fan of the collaborative filmmaking site http://www.wreckamovie.com, which sprang from the success of the Star Wreck projects (see https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Star_Wreck:_In_the_Pirkinning).

The minds behind this are quite serious about their intentions to disrupt the cosy and closed-off world of filmmaking, stick two fingers up at the industry fat-cats and smash their corrupt monopolies. Good for them, I reckon.

One wreckamovie project I've been following in particular is Iron Sky, a Nazis-in-space black comedy which, now in production, is currently making waves in Cannes. These guys have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding via their fanbase and other crowdsourced initiatives. They've just released a video explaining their - proven - model of collaborative funding and filmmaking, which is well worth watching:

This is the Iron Sky presence at wreckamovie - http://www.wreckamovie.com/ironsky - which is a fascinating record of the project from inception, calls for contributions/collaborators/suggestions and all the discussions and information that informed this enterprise.

No, Muvizu has nothing to do with wreckamovie and nothing to do with Iron Sky, but we are keen to encourage user collaboration and what these guys are doing deserves to be talked about, supported, emulated and recognised for the groundbreaking achievement it is.

They may establish a new, global industry model that will last a thousand years ...

Posts: 471 		I highly recommend collaborating with others on a project. I too am working with a few fellow Muvizu-ers and I can say that it is not only great fun but for me it has opened up new ways of thinking and looking at things that I wouldn't normally have come up with on my own.

2 or more heads really are better than 1...

As I said earlier I'm working on a couple of collaborative projects. In doing so I think I have managed steer myself away from my "one man band" approach to making a movie. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy having full control over the clips that I make on my own, but sharing the process has given me the opportunity to see how other minds tick when confronted with the same idea.

Breaking down the different processes of making a Muvizu movie into really specific tasks that can be shared out to others is an interesting approach which hasn't really been explored yet as far as I know, but would be a great project to be part of.

The different tasks as I see them are...

The general story outline
The script
The audio (music and voices)
Set creation
Lighting
Object creation
Character creation
Character direction/movement
Head and eyes direction
Camera direction/movement
and finally editing

Not everyone is good at, or enjoys the above steps so why not enter into a project where you can do the task that is your strength and allow others to step into the waters which you sometime find to deep.

I'm still very new to using the software and getting the results I imagine but I sure do love acting and can throw out a voice or two. I've also found a real enjoyment in the editing process. Anyone needing help? I'd be happy to give it a shot.

As for my vision, I think the good news is that it can't be compromised since I have none. laugh

Acting? Voices? Editing? Interesting, VERY interesting!

EXCELLENT post Dreeko!!!

I too am trying to steer away from the "one man band" approach as well. I enjoy doing everything myself but being able to share a project with others and tap into other people's techniques and ideas I'd probably never come up with on my own is really great fun!

Posts: 661 		I would be happy to help out and I like the idea of a collaboration as long as the timescales are not too challenging. Unfortunately I think the majority of us have jobs and families that occasionally need attending to.
I think the way Dreeko has split the tasks seems very logical and could work, but I think that someone will need to "take the lead" so that everyone knows what they are doing and keeps the project moving along.

Just finishing my Christmas based movie which will take a few weeks (Mmmm - June, the perfect time to evoke that festive feeling).

I would suggest small teams of 2-3 willing individuals on each task (if there's enough)- that way it won't get too time onerous.

I'm quite excited.

Yes I think that this is the case. Someone will have to take a "producers" role to guide the process from the start to finish and it may be best for that person to be the one who's idea/vision it is that everyone is helping to realise in movie form. But I'm sure if the ideas/script man wants to be just that, then I imagine the overseer hat could be worn by anyone who was willing.

Knowing your overwhelming scripting prowess I'm obviously interested but can we have more details about your movie pitch?

Posts: 20 		Essentially, the premise is this: the Nazis discover the secret of time travel and use it to go back and change history, so that they can rule the world. Discovering this, the British government, which also discovers time travel (perhaps through stealing the technology, the details are still a bit fuzzy in my head), launches a counter-offensive, going back to try to counter-act what the Nazis have done. This may involve things like seducing Hitler's mother to stop his conception. It would riff on all sorts of franchises and genres, such as James Bond, Indiana Jones, The Terminator and various war movies, as well as poking fun at some aspects of contemporary Britain, such as the Royal Family. I have a few jokes in mind, but it's very much up-in-the-air at the moment.
