So I've imported some arctic terrain from sketch-up, from a set by Nick Morgan #5 , #18.
I've tried to match colours but one looks greyer than the other.

See here: http://min.us/lbp68qJ7sSMTX1

Any thoughts?

I had a similar problem and could'nt fathom it, in the end I pointed a coloured light at the offending item...I managed to get things a little closer...but not much!

It's hard to diagnose the problem from the screenshot. There are lots of non-colour reasons why two apparently similar pieces of geometry may look different. It could be one, some or none of these reasons. Jargon alert...

Normals
If an object has weird normal angles then it can render funny

Material
You'll notice that a pure red box is different to a pure red character. This is because our characters have a translucent quality and it means that the
R colour can be affected by light passing through them

Ambient occlusion
An object with AO willbe darker than the colour you set

Unreal and textures
The unreal engine displays colours and textures differently. Even though the colour ( as defined mathematically by a RGB number) is the same as a texture it will look different. Don't ask...I've no idea why.

Hope this helps or bamboozles at the very least

Well I'm sure there are lots of techy reasons for it - I had expected these models to have the same characteristics and therefore react the same way. They had the same colour in sketchup. The annoying thing is that I cannot get rid of the colour cast that one has so that even white looks grey(as per the screen-shot). Maybe AO - which sounds like a default 'in-shadow' effect. Can we turn it off in the ASE file?

I realise the Unreal engine will give some limitations as to what's possible. Colour seems to be a particular issue ( I mentioned in another thread that the top and skirt of a character don't match when they have the RGB values, also getting some doors and walls to match) - it's just frustrating.

I'll grab a copy of Sketchup and see how to go about getting a model from there into Muvizu. An updated video tutorial will follow, but it may take me a while...I've never used Sketchup before.

We've got a FBX pipeline in-house. maybe it's time to think about converting our import tools to look for FBX instead. I'll ask our Dev chaps. No promises, mind.

Very kind. It would be nice to use the Sketchup stuff as there's a big 3D warehouse.

For those of us who aren't 3D artists, we need either an easy way to make stuff or an easy way to get free stuff - both of which Sketchup gives. That said, FBX export needs the Pro version at $500 (gulp).
The free built-in ones are KMZ, DAE.

Having been in IT since the war (well it feels that long) I know that hacking someone else's stuff is usually the quickest way to do it 'cos someone's always done it before, which is what makes Sketchup good bet.

This page tells you what other plug-ins there are(Google wants you to know about)
http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/download/plugins.html

I don't work for Google.

BTW when I reopened the project I got warning messages about the arctic terrain and the upshot was the colour property had disappeared.

Thanks for pursuing this,
Simon
