I have this system (below) and I find to render 1 minute of video it takes about 45 minutes using xvid.
Is this normal or will it pick up with a new system with a dedicated video card? Or will more Ram help?

Thanks.
Eliezer

Hi ekessler - your laptop has plenty of memory, but not much video power. A desktop machine with a decent video card, or a gaming laptop, would be a lot faster to render. Muvizu is based on a game engine, so you need a machine capable of running that kind of software to get the best out of it.

Just to be able to justify the expense of a new system, how long would a minute of video take to render with a decent video card?
Thanks.

Hi there,

The rendering in Muvizu doesn't work the say way than, lets say, games. In games the rendering is done is real time while you move through the level / scene.

In Muvizu the rendering will take almost the same amount of time with a "not so good" card than it will take with a "superb" video card.
The difference will be so subtle that you might not even notice the difference.

However you will definitely save time with a good card, because it will speed up your work flow.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Marco

Thanks for the fast reply. So basically you are saying that if I am happy will the speed the program responds to, there is no need to upgrade, as I will not shave any time off the rendering.

This sounds funny considering that sony vegas can render a minute of Muvizu video in about 5 minutes--but I will take your word for it.
thanks again.

Yep, if you are happy with your FPS then I don't see a reason to upgrade your video card.

Cheers,

Hi ekessler - I think Marco is right, that you don't need to upgrade. You can if you want of course.

When you are rendering in Song Vegas what it is doing is taking source frames (basically images) and applying any effects or changes you made in them and then saving out more images as a sequence to a AVI or other format video file.

When Muvizu is rendering what it is doing is taking a lot of objects and characters, applying textures, colours, shadow, lighting and all the other effects in your scene before it finally produces frames to put into the video - so this type of rendering will always take longer than a video editor.

If you did buy a state of the art new graphics card, then you probably would get some performance increase and therefore a decrease in render time. Its not possible to give an estimated time for 1 minute of video as every bit of video you are rendering is different. One scene might have fog and fire effects with lots of spot lights and realistic shadows enabled while another scene, of the same length, might have just one character. So the estimate comes down to so many factors that there isn't a comparable base to give an estimated render time.

I hope this makes sense

I use a laptop with intel i7 (4 cores - 1.6 GHz), 4GB ram and nvidia chipset GForce GT230M

The rendering of 1 minute Xvid 1280x720 is around 9'30" for a movie with ligths, fire and 9 characters like : http://www.muvizu.com/Video/19566/Faust-Mephisto

Wow! That is 9 and one half minutes compared to my 45?

As another example, I built this set on my i5 (@4Ghz), 8gb RAM, Nvidia GTS450

4 cameras, 11 lights, no effects, and 130-odd characters. And it takes just over 20 minutes to render out 1 minute of 1280x720 iYUV AVI. Thing is, it's impossible to animate - each action you take that effects the timeline gives you a 5 or 6 second pause while Muvizu grinds to a halt thinking about stuff. In the end I had to have the audience in a split screen with the speaker on stage animated on her own... what I'm saying is that it's all relative, and you should just keep pushing ahead until your PC pushes back
