Staundoone Episode 1

"The Power" A new telly arrives at the station and Tony discovers he has a power. Staundoone is a comedy series set in a fire station in the not to distant past

This episode took a good long time to complete as I had to battle with codecs, dodgy editing software and general techno twaddle all of which were conspiring against me. The one consistently well behaved piece of technology involved in the process was a laptop loaned to me by the good people of Muvizu (namely Vince) which ran like a dream

Thanks again!

Cheers
D

PS: As this episode was based on a real event the names have been changed to protect the stupid

Good work, Dreeko (Could just be me, but I thought the laugh track was distracting. Well, irritating, actually... But the piece is so well done overall that I forgive you!)

Lol! I knew it would get under someone's skin!

I did deliberate on whether the laughter would sit well in a cartoon but then I remembered "wait Till your Father Gets Home" and I thought "bugger it, It's going in!" and after all It's a sitcom set somewhere between the 70s and the 80s and you can;t have that without canned laughter!
Remember Rising Damp, Happy Days, Dads Army etc.

Funnily enough I was watching the Disney channel with my daughter and all the shows that were on were riddled with it, and yes it was getting on my Brad Pitts (rhyming slang!) too!

Didnt you think that some of the scenes benefited from it though?

You can look forward to more of it in the following episodes you'll be pleased to hear!
I will try and be more economic with its use and next time I'll try and match the laughter to the viewing audience

I know there are a few rough edges but I'm pleased with i,t as it's my first original vid with a beginning, middle and end!....anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback!

Cheers

Brilliant, Mr Dreeko. I think I just wet myself!

PS: Personally I loved the laugh track, it made it seem more authentic and gave it a real sitcom vibe.

I know why it's there (sadly, I was around for it the first time).
I just figure that, since you are clear about the time setting, you don't need to bash the viewer over the head with the idea. It's just occurred to me that maybe you could just confine it to one or two scenes per episode, one that really personifies the type of situation where those sitcoms would have had a heavy hand on the laugh track. For example, the first time the guy with the power gets naked and then (maybe) again when he does so in front of the TV store window. Ooh-er, missus.

Could be a sort of trademark, perhaps...

What do other people here think?

You definitely captured the old classic feel. It was really well made with great script and voices.
Fantastic job Dreeko. Look forward to the next episode.

Must admit I think Sirih has a point. I know the canned laughter was an important part of the sitcoms you are mimicking but it is an annoying part. Perhaps you could leave it in but reduce the volume a bit so it is not quite as intrusive.
It's a tricky balance because it certainly adds to the feel of it but at the same time I think detracts slightly from what is an excellent, funny animation

Dreeko,

I really liked this. I think you're really onto something. I like the pacing - slow. You take your time to tell the story and tell it well. I have a real soft spot for voice overs - love it.

Now to the canned laughter. I see what you achieved with making it seem like an old style sitcom - and this worked. My worry is that by episode five the story and animation will still be great, but this "homage" will have out-stayed its welcome.

Just my two pennies.....

What makes it even funnier is to know it is based on a real event.

That's hilarious.

Also, personally, I think the laugh track worked. Most of the time, I didn't even notice it was there, and it added to the vibe. (Maybe it's a Muvizu employee thing - since at least 3 of us like it.)

I'm really looking forward to episode 2.

make that 4. i can see how at certain points people felt annoyed with it, but i think with the gags the way they were & the narration - it felt olde timey comedy and i give it 2 enthusiastic thumbs up!

Firstly, I really enjoyed your show - it's always good seeing a stupid supervisor getting the mickey taken out of them.

As for the laughter track - perhaps you could go for the middle ground and use a different laugh track for your next video? That would allow you to keep the same 'vibe' while making it less likely that people will get fed up with it.

I know that late '90s early '00s BBC comedies used to really get on peoples nerves as they all used the same laugh track, made up of about 5 different sound clips.

Take it easy,
-Jim.

brilliant episode....

and make it another muvizu employee who loved the laugh track!

i bearly noticed it and i really think laugh tracks work.....thats why sitcoms use them and its not just 70's shows either....prob the biggest one of all time (friends) uses them extensivly alongside the live audience stuff.

loved it

I always prefer a live audience to a laugh track, but a sitcom with nothing can often feel like it's missing something - for instance series 7 of Red Dwarf had a laugh track (the annoying 5-clip BBC one) but when you watched the DVD version which didn't have anything it felt incomplete.

Laugh tracks can add to a programme, when they are varied and used correctly, and I thought the one that Dreeko used was pretty good. I just thought I would suggest mixing it up a bit.
